How to read a whey protein label

Understand powder weight, protein grams, whey type and a comparable cost per 25 g of label-declared protein.

One scoop is not all protein

Start with two figures from the same labeled serving: grams of powder and grams of protein. Protein by weight is protein grams divided by powder grams, multiplied by 100. It describes the label's stated composition, not the result of a laboratory test or a score of product quality.

For an illustrative calculation only, 24 g of protein in a 30 g powder serving is 80% protein by weight. The example is not a real product listing.

Compare the cost of protein, not just the tub

We first divide a quoted package price by its number of servings, then use:

Cost per 25 g protein = cost per serving × 25 ÷ protein grams per serving

This calculation requires a valid label amount and a current offer. It does not measure digestibility, purity, safety or efficacy. Whey concentrate, isolate, hydrolyzed whey and whey blends are labeled distinctly; plant proteins and mass gainers are outside this comparison group.

You can review our comparison method before using any published product figures. If the whey category has no reviewed products yet, we leave its public catalog closed rather than populate it with fictional listings.
